Local folklore credits Freeport with being the birthplace of Maine,
as colonists from Massachusetts
regularly debated over separation movements within the area's local tavern. Founded
in 1789, the city is recognizable for Pettengill
Farm and Wolfe's
Neck Farm, both offering nature walks and guided tours. The Freeport
Historical Society features a research library, educational programs and a
museum for visitors interested in the history of the city. The Wolfe's
Neck Woods State Park and the Desert
of Maine both promote the preservation of the city's natural environment,
as well as offer walking trails and picnic areas. Outdoor points of interest include
the Freeport
Country Club Golf Course, safari tours of the Desert of Maine and sailboat
tours of Casco
Bay. Introductions to area recreation activities are available through both
the Woman
Under Sail and the L.L.
Bean Outdoor Discovery Schools. Also, do not miss Maine
Winterfest in January to witness carving and snow works by professional and
amateur ice carvers.
